The original Gears of War quickly became a massive success. The main story followed the troops of Delta Squad as they fought to save humanity from a subterranean enemy called the Locust. The player assumed the role of Marcus Phoenix, a former prisoner and soldier. To move on, the use of cover and strategic fire was required and these were two of the main features that clearly showed why the game was so popular. Gears of War sold over three million copies in just ten days and it became the fastest-selling title of 2006 and was the second most played game over Xbox Live during 2007, just after Halo 3. Gears of War was also praised by critics, mainly because of its polished gameplay and its really detailed graphics, winning several “Game of the Year” awards. As a consequence, the game started a new franchise and it only took a couple of months before a sequel appeared.
Gears of War 2 was released in November 7, 2008 and was a bigger, more technically proficient and heavily modified sequel. The game continues the story, this time around, Sergeant Marcus Phoenix led Delta Squad into the center of the planet to combat the worm, but found something more shocking instead. The main campaign could be played cooperatively with a second player controlling Marcus’ best friend, Dominic “Dom” Santiago. Newer multiplayer modes and challenges were included and some of them were extraordinary. For example, a “Horde” mode was featured, allowing up to five players to combat waves of Locust forces. Additionally, some new weapons, mechanics and abilities were first introduced, and even though these weren’t mind-blowing, some of them represented really nice additions. When Gears of War 2 was released, it sold over two million copies, becoming the best-selling video game of 2009. As its predecessor the game was praised by critics and fans alike and most additions were really welcomed.
Now, five years after the release of the first part, Gears of War 3 will represent the final installment of the trilogy. The story takes place 18 months after the events of Gears of War 2 (known as the Fall of Jacinto), in the apocalyptic planet of Sera. The game will be the first one in the series to feature a four-player co-op and the main campaign is set to be easier than the last one, as apparently there were many players who never got to finish Gears of War 2 due to the challenging difficulty. The story will also introduce three female characters: Anya Stroud, Samantha Byrne and Bernadette Metaki (a character taken from one of the novels). Jace Stratton is another character that’ll be key part of the story; apparently he is a soldier who has previously been mentioned in the second game. Some new enemies are expected to appear also, like new lambent, the berserkers and more enemies from the Locust faction. Also, some of the new voice actors were announced. Hip-hop stars Drake and Andrew Colvin will voice Jace Stratton and Griffin, respectively. Claudia Black will be the voice of Sam Byrne and Ice-T is expected to voice Griffin, a new unknown character whose role is still a mystery.
Furthermore, two new weapons were officially announced: a shotgun and a Pendulum War Era Lancer. Not only that, but other weapons were revealed: like an Incendiary Grenade, the Digger Launcher (these two were announced in an issue of Game Informer), the One Shot, the Gorgon Pistol (also known as the Gorgon SMG) and a new turret. Some rumors suggest that there may be a fully controllable mech suit, armed with heavy weaponry that’ll include two modes: an assault one (to be controlled by a character) and a stationary one (to be locked into a fixed position). Also, the unlockable system which was included in Gears of War 2 will apparently be included in the third part as well.
The multiplayer has always been a huge part of the series and Gears of War 3 will feature some really interesting changes, like the new Beast mode, which is the opposite of Horde mode. Tokens are earned by killing enemies, and these can be used to upgrade the character to a strongest type of Locust. Of course, the original Horde mode will appear but it’ll include something new elements. Team Deathmatch, Capture the leader and some other modes will also be an important part of Gears of War 3. There are many more details about the story but let’s try not to spoil it here, as you’ll be able see everything there is to see really soon, so if you’re a fan of the series this finale is not likely to disappoint.
