A new report states that 2012 will be the release year of Sony’s next generation console, the PlayStation 4. Taiwanese component makers have indicated PS4 production will begin by the end of 2011, in order to have the system ready to ship sometime next year. The main source of this report is technology site DigiTimes.
The report did not refer to the console’s graphical capabilities, but it confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will feature “movement-based control like Kinect.” Additionally, two PlayStation 3 manufacturers, FoxConn and PegaTron Technology, are expected to assume the same roles for this new console. The report goes on to say that the number of consoles shipped is expected to reach 20 million units.
If this report is right, the PS4 will not be the only console coming next year, as the Wii U is expected to be released in 2012. Also, there are many rumors surrounding the successor to the Xbox 360, the latest one being that it may be announced at E3 2012.
Sony has yet to refer to the rumors and reports, but I do not think they will be commenting on the topic any time soon.
