DC Universe Online Goes Free-to-Play

DC Universe Online was released in January 2011 and the title used a subscription based model, but yesterday, Sony officially announced that the game will be free-to-play. Both PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the game will be affected by the new model, so those people who want to play an MMORPG which is set in the DC Universe here’s the perfect opportunity to do so.

The free-to-play model has proven to be extremely successful and many current and popular games have started using it, like Team Fortress 2, The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, Champions Online, League of Legends and many more. Soon, an update will be released, allowing DC Universe Online users to have the option of playing it for free. In any way, DLC packs won’t be available for free and those who want access to the content will have to buy it or they can choose a better membership.

There are three types of memberships: Free, Premium and Legendary. To get Premium access you need to spend $5 or more in the in-game store or have an old subscription based account. This type of subscription gives you many in-game items. The Legendary membership, on the other hand, costs $14,99 and provides access to all the DLC packs for free, among other things.

The fact that the game is now free-to-play is great news for all those players who were interested in DC Universe Online’s concept but didn’t want to pay a monthly fee to play it. The change in models is expected to happen in late October. For more details about the different types of memberships please visit the official site.
