Although the Mass Effect games have always been about playing a single-player adventure, for the past few months there have been myriad rumors about the game having multiplayer capabilities. Well, Bioware has confirmed those rumors and it is now safe to say that Mass Effect 3 will have multiplayer options. In fact, not only the game will feature multiplayer support, it’ll also have 4-player cooperative missions.
“There will be a multiplayer component for #ME3. Full details soon, so wait until then before making your decision. We think you’ll like it!” said Bioware through their official Twitter feed. Mass Effect 3 will be the first game in the series to feature multiplayer options, but the exact details about the included missions is still unknown. Moreover, the latest issue of OXM (Official Xbox Magazine) has an in-depth story in which the announcement is revealed.
The game will be released on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles on March 6.
As usual, let’s reminisce a little bit about previous titles in the series, in this case Mass Effect 1:
The first Mass Effect is a science fiction RPG third person shooter game made by Bioware and published by Electronic Arts. The game came out on the PC and the Xbox 360. The unlikely marriage of genres surprised most people, especially as it worked so well, mixing many disparate and incomparable elements. The story follows Commander Shepard as he tries to save the galaxy from a race known as The Reapers. Also, something worth noting is that Mass Effect was already planned as a trilogy before the first game came out
Something quite engaging about Mass Effect is the possibility of creating your own character as you can customize his/her appearance, genre or even abilities. The title had some similarities to previous Bioware games like, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Jade Empire (both released for the original Xbox,) as those games had a conversation system that allowed players to choose from various responses once the NPCs have finished talking. Additionally, dialogue is a strong part of the morality system as it directly affects the path the main character takes, in simpler terms, this determines whether he/she becomes “good” or “evil.” Mass Effect received numerous awards from various publications, but is has also been the subject of controversy for the inclusion of a sex scene.
Eventually, the game became such a huge success that it received two pieces of downloadable content. The first one called “Bring Down the Sky,” featured a new world which included a new race of characters known as the batarians. The second DLC was called Pinnacle Station and took an unusual mission style and every time the player finished a series of missions a new series was unlocked. Finally, once all the missions were beaten the player could participate on a hard Survival mission. This piece of content was poorly received for its lack of innovation and repetitive nature.
