Obsidian Working on a South Park RPG

This is something that nobody was expecting. In addition to a digital platformer game called South Park: Tenorman’s Revenge (developed by Other Ocean Interactive for Xbox Live Arcade,) there will be another title based on the South Park franchise. Obsidian Entertainment has officially announced on the latest issue of Game Informer that they are working on a new South Park game. The American company has developed extremely popular role-playing games such as Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Neverwinter Nights 2 along with its two expansion packs, Alpha Protocol, Fallout: New Vegas and the upcoming Dungeon Siege III.

Comedy Central’s South Park has had multiple game adaptations over the years, but this latest title, which will be coming out for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will be a role-playing game and it’ll be published by THQ.

Apparently, in the game the player will assume the role of one kid, make friends and defend the city from various threats. Game Informer’s cover features the main protagonists (Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny for all those who are not very familiar with the animated comedy show) along with most of the supporting cast. Additionally, their reflection on a pond shows a dragon and Satan which may be some of the threats that the player will be required to fight in the game.

It has also been confirmed that the series’ creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be in charge of voice acting and the game’s script. THQ has stated that South Park: The Game will be available in the second half of 2012, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

There have been many games based on the South Park franchise and some of them include:

  • South Park (Nintendo 64, PlayStation and PC)
  • Chef’s Luv Shack (Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, PlayStation and PC)
  • South Park (Pinball)
  • South Park Rally (Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, PlayStation and PC)
  • South Park 10: The Game (Mobile Phones)
  • South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Game (Xbox Live Arcade)
  • Tenorman’s Revenge (will be released in 2012 on Xbox Live Arcade)

Although most titles based on the adult comedy show have received overwhelmingly negative reviews the only game which seems to have been remotely good is South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Game, which came out in 2009 and as its name indicates is a tower defense game. Developed by Doublesix the title mixes tower defense elements with fast-paced action, making it a little bit different to other games of the same genre. Furthermore, the humor so characteristic of the comedy series has been translated very well into the game and most of the characters were included. Many consider this the best title based on the series.
