Along with Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic: The Gathering, the Pokemon Trading Card Game has been one of the most popular TCGs of the past few years as it offers a gentle learning curve, a unique depth and a great variety of cards and expansions that are released at the same time as some of the video games. The problem with these type of TCGs is that not everyone can invest so much time on decks that not only are really expensive (believe me,) but also require you to have a friend to play with.
Those people who want to have this kind of experience can start playing Pokémon TCG Online, which is now in open beta. The steps to do so are really simple, you need to sign up for a free account, choose one of the three basic decks and you can then start playing against others almost immediately. Additionally, the browser-based game offers to possibility of playing a robust single-player campaign before challenging others.
The basic functionality is quite simple, but unfortunately most loading times are really long. In addition to this, the Pokémon TCG: Black & White Emerging Powers theme decks and booster packs have been launched simultaneously with the game and those who buy them will get special codes that can be used to unlock unique cards on the online game. Rules are really well explained and you can check them in the middle of a match if necessary. After playing just a couple of matches I can say that I had a great time with it and I’m pretty sure the game will start expanding soon. The addictive nature of the gameplay is still present here and matches are highly enjoyable even though you’re not playing with real cards. My first impression with the game was extremely good and I hope that those who are interesting in this version of the TCG give it a try.
