We’re a few weeks away from E3 2012. As usual during this time of the year many websites are reporting some rumors, speculations and potential announcements that may or may not happen at E3. In this article, I’ll focus on the PlayStation Vita, Sony’s underperforming portable console. What does Sony need to announce at their conference to make the Vita more appealing to consumers?
Sequels, new IPs, spinoffs, remakes, whatever, I’m pretty sure at this point Vita owners don’t care, they just want more games. Indeed, the handheld desperately needs more games. So what about announcing a new Patapon exclusive for the Vita, maybe a LocoRoco? What about a Square Enix RPG? Sure, why not?
As an example, these are some of the titles that were exclusively released for the PSP, take this short list as a reference as to what to expect for the Vita: Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII, Dissidia Final Fantasy, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War: Ghosts of Sparta, GTA: Chinatown Wars, GTA: Liberty City Stories, GTA: Vice City Stories, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, Metal Gear Ac!d, Metal Gear Portable Ops, MGS: Peace Walker, the Monster Hunter saga and Rock Band Unplugged, among many others.
Apart from new titles, many Vita users want more applications for the handheld. Currently, the Vita has applications such as Near, Party, PlayStation Store, Trophies and Friends. In addition, there are some third party applications such as Netflix, Skype, Facebook, LiveTweet, Foursquare and Flickr. But apart from these apps, the console definitely needs some others. The most important one is probably YouTube as it’s one of the most popular apps among smartphone users. Picture this: you’re stuck in a given game, you pause it, go to YouTube and watch a comprehensive walkthrough and see what you’re doing wrong.
Additionally, what about including a rudimentary version of WordPress? WordPress is a small program that allows the creation of new pages or blog posts among many other things. Blogs are getting increasingly popular nowadays and being able to manage your blog from the Vita doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. Using it on the Vita to manage comments would be great for example.
Finally, Instagram would also be a great app to have on the Vita. Instagram allows users to take pictures, apply digital filters to them and share them on various social network services such as Facebook and Twitter. Considering that the PS Vita has two cameras, taking pictures and do some basic editing with an intuitive application would be a good idea. Facebook recently acquired Instagram for $1 billion so I don’t know if getting the rights for a Vita app is as simple as it seems. Nonetheless, try and make it happen Sony.
A Price Drop
Although this decision may be quite controversial, many experts are already predicting that Sony’s latest handheld will receive a significant price cut really soon. Of course, this is the same thing that happened to Nintendo with their 3DS. About a year ago, the Japanese-based company decided to cut the price of the 3DS from $249.99 to $169.99. At the time that was seen like a desperate move to try to sell more consoles and even though that definitely helped to sell more units, for many that meant that the portable console was already failure.
PSone Classics Support
Can anyone please tell me why the Vita doesn’t have PSone Classics support yet? I know Sony said this feature was eventually coming, but what is taking them so long? There are currently hundreds of PSone classics available for both the PS3 and PSP, but you can’t play them on the Vita for some unknown reason. Playing these games on a portable is a really good idea, especially if you didn’t own an original PlayStation back in the day or if you missed most of the titles that were available for it. These games are quite cheap (ranging from $9.99 to $6.99) and there is a wide selection of classics to choose from.
Final Fantasy Type-0
Remember all those games that were supposed to come out for the PSP but for several reasons didn’t? Well, what about releasing all those games digitally for both the PSP and the Vita? Really, even if it’s just Final Fantasy Type-0, go ahead and release it already…
