As most of you probably know, Kevin Tancharoen’s real-world take on the Mortal Kombat franchise started as a result of the popularity of a viral video in which the talented director was directly trying to pitch an idea for a new film. Mortal Kombat: Legacy is the first episode of nine live-action shorts based on a re-imagined version of the franchise which tries to explore the characters’ motivations for participating in the tournament.
This first episode focuses on three of the main characters: Kano, Sonya Blade and Jax Riggs. During this premier episode we can see how Kano, member of the Black Dragon Cartel, is trying to build some weapons with the materials he stole from the Robotic Defense Program. Sonya finds about his secret hideout and tries to disrupt the illegal operation, but she’s captured by Kano and his men. Kano then uses her as bait to attract Jax and Stryker to the warehouse where he will attempt to kill them once and for all.
As a premiere episode this is simply great. Of course, even after watching the first episode it’s too early to make a more critical evaluation of where the series is going. Nevertheless, the first impression couldn’t have been better. Production values are top-notch, special effects are pretty impressive and this first part is masterfully directed. I’m really looking forward to Episode 2 and I also hope this mini-series proves that when done correctly, a video game adaptation is definitely possible.
