Will Nintendo Redeem Itself with the Release of Kirby’s Dream Collection?

When the Super Mario All-Stars: Limited Edition collection came out to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, it felt like the perfect opportunity to compile some of the best games in the series on one disc. Basically, the Wii game included a reissue of 1993’s Super Mario All-Stars (originally released for the SNES) which included Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros 3. Additionally, a CD soundtrack and 32-page Super Mario history booklet were also included, along with the possibility of using pretty much any controller to play the aforementioned games. Unfortunately, the $29.99 package was underwhelming to say the least.

Those games are also available on the Wii’s virtual console and I don’t think most people were looking at the history booklet or the CD soundtrack and thinking that those extras were going to make a huge difference. Additionally, the disc itself didn’t feature any extra content, just the games. Taking into account that you can go to YouTube and find countless commercials, episodes from the cartoon and so on, this felt like a missed opportunity. In the end, Super Mario Bros. didn’t receive the collection the series deserved. But now, Nintendo finds itself in a similar situation, but fortunately, they can prove that they have learned from their mistakes and release a compelling package that will be extremely appealing to their fans.

In order to celebrate Kirby’s 25th anniversary, the Japanese-based company will be releasing Kirby’s Dream Collection: Special Edition for the Nintendo Wii, an inviting compilation that will feature six games: Kirby’s Dream Land, Kirby’s Adventure, Kirby’s Dream Land 2, Kirby Super Star, Kirby’s Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64: Crystal Shard. The game is coming out in Japan on July 20th and it’ll feature a booklet and a soundtrack. The US version of the game will probably have extras, but they haven’t been detailed yet.

Although I’m pretty sure the US release will have the same goodies, the sheer amount of content this package includes is simple staggering. Of course, we can’t think of a collection like this just in terms of quantity, but six games seem like a really generous offer. Expect Kirby’s Dream Collection: Special Edition to be released in America this September.
