Neo Geo Returns This December as a $200 Handheld

Neo Geo X Gold

Earlier this year (on January to be more precise,) there were rumors about SNK working on a portable iteration of the Neo Geo. The company’s idea basically involved releasing a handheld version of the Neo Geo with 20 classic games already pre-installed and with 2GB of internal storage to get even more titles. Well, it seems like SNK is actually working on a portable console called Neo Geo X Gold, but they might have already started off on the wrong foot as they are planning to sell it for $200.

That’s right, SNK wants you to pay $200 for a console that plays 20+ year-old games when you could easily buy a PSP or a PlayStation 3 and get most of those same titles on PSN. To be fair, the Neo Geo X Gold has 20 pre-loaded classics, an arcade joystick and a docking station, but I don’t believe all these extras justify the portable console’s price. According to the official release, the docking station will allow players to connect the portable device to a TV or monitor via an HDMI or A/V out.

Just in case you were wondering, here’s the official list of games that will be pre-installed in the handheld:

  • 3 COUNT BOUT
  • LEAGUE BOWLING
  • ART OF FIGHTING II
  • MAGICIAN LORD
  • ALPHA MISSION II
  • METAL SLUG
  • BASEBALL STARS II
  • MUTATION NATION
  • CYBER LIP
  • NAM 1975
  • FATAL FURY
  • PUZZLED
  • FATAL FURY SPECIAL
  • REAL BOUT – FATAL FURY SPECIAL
  • THE KING OF FIGHTERS ’95
  • SAMURAI SHODOWN II
  • KING OF THE MONSTERS
  • SUPER SIDEKICKS
  • LAST RESORT
  • WORLD HEROES PERFECT

The limited edition console comes out on December 6th, 2012 as part of a worldwide release and even though no retailers were confirmed yet, most people are expecting the most popular ones (Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon and so on) to be selling the console.
