No Final Fantasy XIII-3 for You, Third Iteration of Final Fantasy XIII Will Be Called Lightning Returns

Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns

Final Fantasy XIII will receive a new iteration and surprisingly enough it won’t be called Final Fantasy XIII-3. Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns will be the name of the upcoming title which was officially unveiled at the series’ 25th Anniversary event in Japan. Additionally, a video was shown during the presentation but unfortunately, it hasn’t been made available to the public yet.

People involved in the project promised that this will be the third and final game in the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy and that they won’t keep exploiting this portion of the franchise anymore. Lightning Returns will take place in a world called Novus Partus composed of four large islands. There, players will assume the role of Lightning as she tries to find a way to save the world from collapsing. The female character’s appearance can be fully customizable and while the combat system will remain the same (Paradigm Shift,) players will be able to move Lightning and change weapons in the battlefield.

Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns will be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.

Hey Eric, where did you read that the combat system will remain the same? When i saw the video’s on their website they said they were going to revamp the whole thing with lightning being movable and the input of ” combo’s “. I’m very interested to know which direction they’re taking, maybe the article i was looking at wasn’t entirely accurate.

I mean, paradigm shifts were only somewhat interesting because of their flexibility and different combinations when working with a team. I don’t see how any of this is still amusing when you’re playing with only one character. This would simplify things so much. It just doesn’t look like a right fit to me. Anyway, interested to hear your thoughts.

      Hi Fosforic!

First of all, glad to see you’re back! Regarding your question about Lightning Returns, I checked all the information through various sources. Apparently, the battle system in this third iteration of the Final Fantasy XIII series will be pretty similar to the one in FFXIII and FFXIII-2 in the sense that they will all be ATB battle systems. Nevertheless, since Lightning will be the only playable character this system has been adapted to make it more compelling, providing the player with more control over her.

According to what I’ve read, instead of selecting commands and queuing them, the players will be able to select attacks and abilities that can be mapped to specific buttons. Additionally, Lightning will be able to move freely through the various battle environments. Finally, some suggest that there will be some QTEs involved, but there’s nothing certain about this final part yet.

Here are a couple of interesting links in case you’d like to read a little bit more about Lightning Returns’ battle system:
