There are various reasons why popular cartoon Adventure Time seems so appealing: it has quirky humor, creative stories and richly elaborate environments. But as most modern animated series it also plays on two levels, since it tries appealing both children and their parents. It was quite surprising when I first realized that the upcoming 3DS game (called Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage) kind of does the same thing.
On the surface, Hey Ice King! (I’m not typing the full title again,) seems like a regular game based on an animated television series. Look again and you’ll find that the gameplay features a top down perspective where the player is encouraged to explore dungeons, but then switches to 2D sidescrolling levels. In other words, Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage (I remembered that I could just copy and paste the whole thing) is quite similar to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
Adventure Time: HIKWYSOG (I’m afraid it doesn’t work as an acronym either) is coming on November 30th for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. In addition to the regular version of the game, various retailers (including GameStop) are offering a Collector’s Edition which includes a copy of the game, a steel-case cover, an exclusive bestiary, a poster map and a stylus in the shape of a sword. The Collector’s Edition will be available for $39.99.
