I must admit that I’m very picky when it comes to digital distribution services. While my personal favorite is GOG.com (formerly known as Good Old Games,) most of the titles I receive for the purposes of review are on Steam. Then, I have used Desura, GamersGate and OnLive, to name but a few. Now Electronic Arts is giving me an incentive to use their service as well: Battlefield 1942 is available for free on Origin.
As a way of celebrating Battlefield 1942’s tenth anniversary, Electronic Arts is giving away digital copies of the seminal World War II shooter through Origin. This version of the FPS doesn’t include any of its expansions (The Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WWII) and the mod functionality is untested, but even with these issues, this is an appealing package nonetheless.
Interestingly, I’ve been meaning to go back to Battlefield 1942 for a long while now and since I couldn’t find the physical copy that I bought back in the day, I ended up forgetting about it. Good thing I got it for free!
