Age of Empires Online was one of those games I was interested in and I kept saying to myself that I was going to find the time to play it. Now I know that will never happen. According to a blog post on the game’s official website, history-based real-time strategy game Age of Empires Online has shut down its servers on July 1st.
Based on the gameplay from the once popular Age of Empires series, Online came out in August 2011 as a free-to-play MMO. When the game launched, it included two civilizations (the Greeks and Egyptians) and eventually received additional civilizations, like the Persians, the Celts, the Babylonians and the Norse. The game also offered a variety of modes, including Defense of the Crete, single-player quests, random matches and Skirmish, among others.
Back in the day, critics praised the game’s cooperative missions, cartoonish graphics and solid foundation, but criticized the price of the premium content. Personally, I’m sad I didn’t find the time to play a few matches before the game was gone forever.
