Nintendo Direct Recap: New 3DS XL, Backwards Compatibility

As part of the latest Nintendo Direct, the company revealed the release date of a bunch of its games, new features and the revision of the 3DS hardware. As usual, I embedded the video above and wrote all the important details about the latest Nintendo Direct live-stream below.

  • Puzzle & Dragons + Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition is coming to the Nintendo 3DS in May.
  • Pokemon Shuffle is a free-to-play puzzle game that’s coming exclusively through the eShop. The game will be available in February.
  • As part of a system update, the Wii U will receive backwards compatibility. Games played using this new feature will be compatible with both the Classic and GamePad controllers. Three games were announced as part of this new feature: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (available now,) Punch-Out (coming January 22nd) and Metroid Prime Trilogy (coming January 29th.)
  • Kirby and the Rainbow Curse will have Amiibo support. The game’s coming February 20th.
  • More Amiibos are coming. Nintendo’s planning to release two new series of Amiibos, one based on Super Smash Bros. and one based on Super Mario.
  • Mario Party 10 is coming on March 20th to both the eShop and retailers.
  • Splatoon is coming in May.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D will be out on February 5th.
  • A new trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X was shown and this one focused on the scope of the role-playing game.
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars is coming to the both the Wii U and 3DS. For this game, Nintendo’s planning to have a feature that’s pretty much the same as “Cross-Buy.” Basically, if you buy one version of the game on one platform, you immediately get the other one for free. The game’s coming to the eShop on March 5th.
  • Bandai Namco announced a new game that will be exclusive to the Wii U. The game’s called “Project Treasure” (this is a working title) and it’ll be a free-to-play online game.
  • Nintendo announced a bunch of games that are coming to its platforms, including Elliot Quest, Citizens of Earth, Gunman Clive 2, Moon Chronicles, Sega 3D Classics, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, Story of Seasons and Fossil Fighters Frontier.
  • The New Nintendo 3DS XL is coming February 13th. Here are some technical details about the hardware.
  • Nintendo proceeded to confirm the release date of some upcoming games: Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is coming March 13th and Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy + is coming February 13th. Also, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (which is exclusive to the New 3DS XL) and Ironfall Invasion are also coming soon to the 3DS.
