5 Fighting Game Special Editions that Are Actually Special

Super Smash Bros Wii U

Let’s be honest, most video game special editions are terrible and those who buy them are wasting their hard-earned money on extras they’ll never use. Figurines, statues, stickers, exclusive DLC, steel covers and official soundtrack CDs… Who cares? But while it’s easy to be cynical about special editions, there are actually a couple of them that are worth having if you love a specific series or genre. This time around, I’ll be focusing on fighting game special editions, so if you see any of these at a good price, check them out. As a way of narrowing down this list to just five games, I omitted special editions that weren’t released in America and none of the special editions included here are more than $150.

5. Super Smash Bros. Wii U Bundle

Platforms: Nintendo Wii
Original price: $100
Content: a physical copy of the game, a GameCube controller adapter and a Super Smash Bros. Special edition GameCube controller.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U Bundle

This is probably the best and most useful special edition if you can get it at a good price. The Super Smash Bros. Wii U bundle comes with a copy of the game, an adapter and a controller. If you’re into the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros, those are all things you’d want anyway and if you ever decide to compete at a tournament level, you would want that bundle in your bag when you participate. There’s nothing extremely special about the bundle, but in this case, less is definitely more.

4. Injustice: Gods Among Us – Collector’s Edition

Platforms: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3
Original price: $60
Content: a 13-inch statue, DC comic book, digital download code for the movie Justice League: Doom, three exclusive DLC skins and of course, a copy of the game.

Injustice - Gods Among Us (Special Edition)

This special edition is nothing to write home about and while I know I’m not doing a great job of selling it, I included it on the list because it comes with some great goodies for only $60. That’s correct, for the price of a regular game, you get a copy of Injustice: Gods Among Us, a comic book, a statue and a digital film. This is certainly not for me (I chose the more traditional route and bought a digital version of the game on the Xbox 360 and that’s it,) but those who are into Injustice or DC Comics will appreciate this bundle.

3. Tekken 6 Limited Edition Wireless Fight Stick Bundle

Platforms: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3
Original price: $142
Content: it comes with a physical copy of Tekken 6, a Tekken 6-themed wireless fight stick made by Hori and an art book.

Tekken 6 Bundle

The Tekken 6 bundle is all about the fight stick. In this case, this special edition comes with a limited edition fight stick made by Hori and the best part about it is that the controller is wireless. Wireless controllers aren’t supported in official tournaments, so if you were interested in getting this package to get a controller you can use for tournaments, you’re out of luck. If, on the other hand, you want a controller you can use at home without the risk of someone tripping on the cable, maybe this is for you.

2. Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set

Platforms: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3
Original price: $149.99
Content: an 8-inch statue of Ryu that lights up, two Blu-Ray discs that features a documentary, an animated series and the movie, CD soundtrack collection with 11 discs, a 64-page art book, a belt, digital copies of Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Street Fighter x Tekken, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike Online Edition and DLC and Street Fighter Alpha 1, 2 and 3.

Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector's Set

Before moving on, take into account that the Xbox 360 version of this special edition is inferior to the PS3 because it doesn’t come with the Street Fighter Alpha trilogy (those games are PlayStation Classics.) Also, note that both versions feature downloadable games and not physical copies. Nevertheless, this is a comprehensive package that includes some items that you won’t be able to get anywhere else (such as the complete series’ soundtrack.) Other than that, it’s a traditional special edition, but the soundtrack, the inclusion of a handful of games and other goodies, make it a nice addition to any fighting game collection.

1. Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition

Platforms: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3
Original price: $149.99
Content: a physical copy of Mortal Kombat (2011), downloadable avatars, an original costume DLC and a fight stick that turns into a storage box.

Mortal Kombat - Tournament Edition

Mortal Kombat fans who were around during the arcade era definitely remember the bizarre layout of the MK cabinets that had buttons that formed an X. A few years ago, if you wanted to play using a controller like that, there was simply no alternative. That is, until Mortal Kombat came out in 2011. The special edition came out with an inexpensive controller that had a terrific quality. If you’re willing to take the risk, an opened version of the Tournament Edition is available for half its original price in some digital stores.
