Ars Technica initially reported that the long-running Nintendo Power is about to be shut down. Since then, there have been multiple tweets that confirmed the report, but most of them have been deleted shortly after. Unfortunately, everything seems to indicate that the report is in fact true and the magazine will publication really soon.
Not only have multiple sources confirmed the news, but it also seems like this is a rumor that has been circulating for a while. According to the report, Nintendo has decided not to renew the licensing agreement with Future Publication (the company that is currently behind the production of the magazine.)
Nintendo Power is one of the longest-running video game magazines (its first issue was published on July/August 1988) and it even transitioned between publishers a few years ago. In addition, some sources state that editors are working on some really compelling surprises for the magazine’s last issue, so we’ll have to wait and see what they’ve been planning.
Finally, I went ahead and included the cover of the last Nintendo Power I bought for nostalgic reasons. I’m pretty sure a lot of people have their own favorite issues or stories related to the magazine. If you are one of those people, go ahead and share them in the comment section of the site.
