Valve confirmed Steam Trading Cards, a new service that will allow players to collect virtual cards by playing several games on Steam. These cards drop at a specific moment during the game or according to the achievements that the player has. Once users have collected a set of cards, those can be crafted into badges and Steam community items, such as emoticons, profile backgrounds and coupons.
All badges have XP which means that they contribute to an overall player level. Leveling up gives that player access to non-tradable items, like profile showcases, extra friend list slots and more.
As of this writing, the supported games include Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Portal 2, Half-Life 2 and Don’t Starve, but more titles will be added soon.
So what does this mean? Basically, Valve wants to reward players by giving them yet another incentive to keep playing the games they really like. Of course, some of those players will be compelled to track down pretty much every single card out there. As if achievement hunting wasn’t enough…
