Top 5: Best Coop Games on the Nintendo Wii

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

I was recently looking for some exclusive Nintendo Wii games that I could play cooperatively and I was surprised to see that there weren’t as many choices as I would have hoped. Nevertheless, there are some fantastic cooperative games on the Wii, but take into account that these are all exclusive Nintendo Wii games that can’t be found on other platforms, so titles like the LEGO series, Rayman Legends, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance or Metal Slug: Anthology weren’t taking into account. Also, games that have minimal cooperative interaction like Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty or Monster Hunter Tri aren’t part of the list either.

5. The House of the Dead: Overkill

There are some great light gun games on the Nintendo Wii that you can play with someone else, such as Resident Evil: The Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles and Dead Space: Extraction, so you should definitely check them out as well, but House of the Dead Overkill is a hidden gem that more people should talk about. Fans of light gun games who want to shoot zombies and watch raunchy cutscenes should get a copy of Overkill.

4. Kirby’s Epic Yarn

It’s extremely difficult to talk about Kirby’s Epic Yarn and not make reference to its incredibly charming aesthetics. Its unique visual style gives the impression of playing in a knitted world where levels are made of cloth, but fortunately, there’s more to this game that pleasing visuals. The creative level design, challenging gameplay, fantastic soundtrack and the possibility of cooperating with a friend makes it easy to recommend.

3. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl allows you to cooperate with a friend if you play on teams, but there’s also a plot-driven, sidescrolling mode called Subspace Emissary where you and a friend complete missions, take on bosses and watch cutscenes. Of course, Brawl is a fantastic game in its own right, but the possibility of playing with someone else in an adventure mode makes the game terrific with a friend.

2. Donkey Kong Country Returns

Let’s get this out of the way at once, Donkey Kong Country Returns can be a pretty challenging game and even more so when you’re playing with somebody else, but if you take the time to master its basic mechanics, it can be rewarding as well. This old-school throwback looks and feels like Donkey Kong Country games, but the addition of cooperative play added a level of depth to the classic formula. There’s a reason why these games were venerated back in the day and developer Retro Games managed to capture that essence and made it into something that you can play with a friend.

1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is, hands down, the best coop experiences you can have on a Nintendo console. The sidescrolling platformer supports up to four players (though this can be pretty chaotic if you don’t talk to each other) and coordinating tactics on the fly is extremely entertaining. Additionally, the inclusion of several inventive power-ups, 80 levels, tried and tested formula and innovations from prior Mario games makes New Super Mario Bros. Wii a must have if you’re into coop games at all.
