Top 5: Upcoming Video Game Movies for 2017

Video game movies are usually the worst, but that won’t prevent me from watching them. For the past few years, I’ve made it my personal mission to review as many of them as I can and I’ve done a terrific job at it (that’s not bragging, believe me.) So what does 2017 have in store for those of us looking forward to watching some films based on games? I compiled a list with some of the best ones, but take into account that may be pushed, delayed or canceled, so take release dates with a pinch of salt.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (January 27th, 2017)

There are already five entries in the Resident Evil movie franchise and as the name of the next one suggests, The Final Chapter will be the last one. Of course, this paves the way for a reboot, spinoff or entire new series, but taking into account that a lot of fans are invested with the story, we all want to know how The Final Chapter wraps up.

Uncharted (June 30th, 2017)

If there’s something that stands out about the Uncharted series of games is how cinematic they are, so turning that into a movie should be a smooth transition. There have been several films about treasure hunters before (Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, The da Vinci Code, National Treasure and so on) and I’m wondering if Uncharted has something new to bring to the table. I guess We’ll find out soon enough.

Splinter Cell (2017)

I barely played any Splinter Cell games back in the day, so I don’t know what to expect from this movie. The series, which was created by Tom Clancy, stars a black ops agent called Sam Fisher who infiltrates behind enemy lines. Last time I checked, this action movie was supposed to come out some time in 2017, so let’s hope that’s still the case.

Tomb Raider (2017)

A reboot of the series of films starring Angelina Jolie from the early 2000s, this upcoming movie will focus on Lara Croft’s first adventure (which you might remember from the 2013 game.) That’s pretty much the only thing we know about the film, but taking into account that Angelina Jolie movies were entertaining and that the reboot was fantastic, we’ll see what this one has in store for fans of the series.

The Witcher (2017)

The Witcher movie will be based on a collection of short stories rather than the extremely popular trilogy of games, but that won’t prevent a legion of fans of the latter from going to the movie theater. The Witcher follows a monster hunter known as Geralt who has superhuman abilities and is trapped between the human and a magical world. We’ll see how that concept translates to a films soon.
